Why I Live Local
When my husband and I moved to the DC area from Boston, I was immediately drawn to Old Town Alexandria as it gave me memories of Beacon Hill and Back Bay. Even though I knew basically no one, I still felt right at home amongst the cobblestone-lined streets and row homes just steps from the water. There was so much going on and so much history. When we got our dog, Tanner, I basically volunteered to walk him just so I could get outside and explore this gorgeous town.
As I continued to explore, I would pop into different boutiques and check out what was new while getting Tanner his treat accordingly. Yes, it was an excuse to shop, but that’s okay. This was how I realized what an amazing community Old Town was. From day one people were inviting and friendly, and I quickly got to know them and vice versa. I soon after learned about the Old Town Boutique District and The Scout Guide Alexandria which encourages shopping (or buying in general) small. It was essentially a community of people supporting each other’s businesses and helping foster the uniqueness of Old Town.
As a pharmacist at a company that is still family owned, I know the importance of good service, and you just don’t get the individual service in a big box store like you do a small shop. You are not a number, they care about you and give you their absolute best everyday. Over time I grew to know the local shop owners like family; they babysat my dog, they attended my birthday party; even just running into each other around town, I truly understood what an amazing community I had become a part of. These locals all breathe Old Town and are making it what is it. When I buy local I feel like I am giving back to those people, keeping Old Town distinct. I hope I inspire others to do the same!
